How Beliefs Affect Reality: Not At All

(Once you get the gist of his speech, skip to 1 minute in).

If you have a martial arts background, you know what went wrong: You’re supposed to break wood along the grain. This guy used plywood, which is several layers of wood glued together, with the grains going in different directions. You can’t break plywood like that.

The problem isn’t belief. It’s that he didn’t understand the mechanics of what he was trying to do.

I’ve long been of the opinion that the tenet “belief powers magick” is a misunderstanding of the fact that doubt is one of the best ways to kneecap your magick. It doesn’t follow that once you no longer doubt something you can just “believe in it more” and reality will miraculously conform.

There is the smart way and the wrong way. This guy was so wrong… Genetic deficiency aside, what then DOES work with the energies around us and ‘reality’ as we understand it? Most teach “fake it ’til you make it” — for success as well as many magick practices. As you stated, doubt can kill any ‘magickal’ progress.. but doubt can also kill progress toward succeeding in anything. So… where does belief (in self) come into play as to connecting with and/or somehow manipulating energy — energy within and without?

  3. Ananael: Well put.

Kol: Good questions. Here’s a post to answer you:
