Teaching at Pantheacon

Saturday, February 14th, 2015

You found my old blog. Thanks for visiting! For my new writing, visit mikesententia.com.

I’m at Pantheacon this weekend. If you are too, you have a bunch of ways to see me.

Today (Saturday) at 1pm, I’m teaching Sensing Emotions, Seeing Magick in the Church of All Worlds suite (room 251).

Tomorrow (Sunday) at 2pm, I’m teaching One Night with 100 Lovers: Inner Archetypes for Polyamory, with the brilliant Francesca Gentille, again in the CAW suite (251).

And Monday at 9am, I’m teaching Hypnosis for Deeper Trance in the San Juan room.

I’m also doing healing sessions all weekend. I’ve gotten exciting results on chronic joint pain, and I want to offer that to a larger audience. So, make a donation to the Church of All Worlds, receive a healing session. In the CAW suite (251).

And for blog readers, if you want a healing session for something else, I’ll do that too. Because I love you guys and appreciate all the support you give me.

(Or just stop by CAW to say hi.)

Engineering Tarot

What would happen if you re-drew some cards in a tarot spread?

It sounds dumb. The spread is supposed to have meaning. You’re supposed to read it, not re-write it. But talking with a friend who does readings, I think it’ll produce better results.

First, some background:

In magick communication, it’s hard to send a long, open-ended message. Psychic communication is noisy, the person’s expectations get in the way, it gets messy. So it’s hard to answer, “Tell me about my career.”

But it’s easy to send “Yes / No.” The two concepts are clearly different, and you can repeat it until the person gets it.

How can you answer an open-ended question with just Yes/No? By playing 20 Questions, reducing “Tell me about my career” to a series of Y/N questions.

In my view, Tarot is a clever way of doing that. Each card has several contradictory meanings, and the reader picks the meaning that “feels best.” That feeling is the psychic Yes/No they receive as they consider each meaning. Added together, that series of Y/N signals produces a reading.

So, the message is transmitted by interpreting the cards. There’s no requirement for the card order to mean anything. Which is good, because psychic intuitions can’t control the order of cards.

(If they could, and we re-asked a question, we’d expect to get the same spread. Also, we’d expect to be able to cheat at poker, controlling who gets what cards. I don’t know any psychic who can do either.)

Except, there’s a snag: Cards do have meaning. Some are about money, others are about love, and so on. Each card has multiple meanings, but no card has all possible meanings. So, what if the best message isn’t available on your current card?

Here’s the solution: Let the source of psychic intuitions ask for a new card.

Here’s how: After you go through your meanings, ask, “Should I draw a new card?” If drawing feels right, do it. Repeat as necessary.

Does it lose some showmanship? Sure. But it should also get you a clearer message. If you try it, please take note of places where you got a card replacement, and leave your results in the comments.

Forum?

Monday, May 12th, 2014

You found my old blog. Thanks for visiting! For my new writing, visit mikesententia.com.

I’m back to writing my book. Well, re-writing — I’m going over the introduction, and greatly shortening Part 1. So that’s where my writing time goes this week.

But several of you requested a forum on this blog. So, let me ask you: What are you looking for? How would this forums be different than other magick forums online?

My requirement is, this forum must be about direct magick. We can talk about connections between direct magick and other systems, how to explain what we do to chaos magicians, and so on. But this blog is about direct magick, and the forum will be, too.

So, thoughts? Do you want a forum? What categories would you like?

Thanks!

Causes of Death

Do you know the leading cause of death for mages?

It’s not demons or curses.

No, mages die from cancer and heart attacks, same as everyone else.

Just one more reason to combine magick with medicine.

Seeing Spirits

Wednesday, March 26th, 2014

How can I see spirits?

I’ve gotten that question more than once. I understand why: If you can see it, you know it’s real, and you know you’re doing it right. Mages often talk about seeing spirits they summon. Plus it looks so easy on TV.

Here’s the thing: Spirits, connections, magickal energy, and all these other ethereal structures don’t interact with light. There’s nothing to see.

That’s true of a lot of things, actually. You can’t see magnetism. Gravitons deflect light, but you can’t see them, either. And dark matter got its name because it doesn’t interact with light. All real, all invisible.

But what about people who summon a spirit and see an angel?

They’re seeing a vision, an image transmitted from the spirit’s mind to theirs. And either their brain is projecting the vision on top of reality, like a mirage, or they’re being a bit liberal with their words, choosing to say they saw a spirit rather than had a vision of a spirit.

Either way, the spirit isn’t interacting with light. It’s interacting with the mage’s brain, something spirits do all the time when they communicate with us.

What if you want that experience? Tell the spirit you’d like a vision. Ask it to show you what it looks like, or something representative of it. Don’t just assume all spirits will do that automatically — in my experience, most don’t.

Will it work? I expect some spirits are better at sending visions than others, and some people are better at receiving them. But if that’s important to you, ask the spirits you know to introduce you to someone who can do that. Then leave a comment letting us know what happened.
