Some explanations produce insight and suggest techniques. Others just quiet your curiosity without actually explaining anything. When you explore magick, it’s important to know the difference.
Me: Imagine I told you, “Objects fall to the earth.” Or instead, I said, “Objects fall to the earth, it’s a natural law.” What’s the difference between the two?
Mom: Well, the second one sounds like it’s decided, like it’s always true.
Me: But is there any difference in what you know? Does one statement tell you more about what will happen?
Mom: No. But the second sounds more certain.
Me: Is that a good thing?
Mom: I don’t know. I like the feel of it, though.
Me: What if you want people to dig? To ask why objects fall to the earth but clouds don’t, or if bowling balls and feathers fall at the same rate, or if that phenomenon applies to other planets? Does that feeling of certainty make it more likely that you’ll dig, or does it make it easier to just accept what you’ve been told and move on?
